St. George’s Captures 2024 CSSHL U17 Prep Tier 2 Western Championship

After trailing 2-0 heading into the third period St. George’s won a thrilling overtime game over South Alberta Hockey Academy (SAHA) to claim the 2024 Canadian Sport School Hockey League (CSSHL) U17 Prep Tier 2 Western Championship.

St. George’s School controlled the majority of the first outshooting SAHA 16-10 but neither team was able to find the back of the net as Imaree Dhaliwal (55/57) and Mattias Radke (40/43) stood tall for their respective teams.

SAHA took over in the second period as Ty Hynes (1G, 1A) opened the scoring 4:27 into the period with his second goal of the Championships. Jack Elliott added a second SAHA goal with 7:19 left in the frame as SAHA outshot St. George’s 26-15 and grabbed a 2-0 lead in the second.

Noah Chen got St. George’s on the board 5:12 into the third to give his team life and a power play goal by Sam Auld 4:20 later tied the game. A broken pane of glass temporarily paused the game midway through the period, resetting the momentum shift that had swung in St. George’s favour. SAHA continued to apply pressure in the third, winning the shot battle 19-10, but the two teams remained tied after regulation.

London Taylor would be the hero for St. George’s, scoring 1:53 into the 10-minute overtime.

This was the first CSSHL U17 Prep Division Championship in St. George’s history, and second championship in program history having captured the 2018 CSSHL U15 Western Championship.
