Creating Community Through Hockey – St. George’s School Equipment Drive

The St. George’s School CSSHL hockey program has been collecting lightly used hockey equipment since 2021. The annual hockey equipment drive has been hugely successful, with over 100 pieces of equipment collected each year.

In 2022, St. George’s donated the equipment to KidSport Tri-Cities , a local organization which supports youth engagement in sport. This year, on behalf of the St. George’s hockey program, U17 Prep student-athlete Sachin Sidhu contacted a minor hockey association in Haines Junction, Yukon to see if they would be interested in receiving some of the equipment directly.  On August 25, Sachin travelled to the Yukon packing large hockey bags stuffed to the max with 150 pieces of equipment of all kinds and sizes.

In Haines Junction, he was greeted by parents and kids representing Haines Junction Minor Hockey. The equipment nearly filled a dressing room in the arena including a couple of St. George’s hockey bags for good measure. The parents and kids were delighted. They expressed their appreciation for the
equipment and giving an opportunity for kids to try hockey who might not otherwise have had the chance.

Thank you to the parents and players at St. George’s for donating gear, to Mr. Blackman and Coach Harkins for their support, and to Sachin for building community connections through sport.
