Pilot Mound wins nail-biter, crowned Midget Varsity champs

Dayvan Bull’s power play goal lifted the Pilot Mound Hockey Academy Midget Varsity team to its first Canadian Sport School Hockey League championship.

Tynan Ewart of Pilot Mound says the championship game was amazing with the teams playing great.

“It was a battle right to the end,” says Ewart of Duncan, B.C.. “I love how our team played. We really came together there. Fought to the last few minutes and got it done.”

Garret Elder setup Bull for the winner with 5:16 remaining as the Buffaloes pulled ahead of the Edge School 2-1 and held on despite a late push from the Calgary-based school.

“It’s amazing. After three years, to finally get my hands on that trophy and banner, it feels really good,” added Ewart. “It’s an opportunity of a lifetime and I’m happy it finally happened.”

Luke O’Brien gave Edge School a 1-0 lead at 14:28 of the first. In the second period, Bull and Brett Tataryn set up Brock MacDonald for the equalizer at 13:04 on the power play.

Dawson Chen made 35 saves for the win, while Kurt Stadlwieser made 32 saves in a losing effort.
