GAME DAY RECAP: January 28, 2024

Prairie Hockey Academy (3) vs RINK Hockey Academy Winnipeg (2) U18 Prep

Avery Johnson (1G, 1A) and Cooper Labelle traded first period goals less than three minutes apart as the two teams went into the intermission tied 1-1. Wyatt Stinton (1G, 1A) gave RHA Winnipeg their lone lead of the game 8:14 into the second before Chance Loke tied the game with 52 seconds left in the middle frame. The game remained even until Prairie forward Luke Mhyre scored the game winning goal with four minutes left to play. Gibson Horne (33/35) outdueled Chase Furlong (39/42) in net to secure his eighth win of the season. 

STAR Hockey Academy (7/OT) vs RINK Hockey Academy Kelowna (6) U15

A high scoring affair saw Aiden Andrews (1=2G, 1A) scored shorthanded 4:28 into the game. Sean McIntyre quickly responded on the same power play scoring 1:19 later. Kyler Bush (1G, 1A) scored 55 seconds after that as STAR led 2-1 after 20. Alexander Sharman (1G, 3A) tied the game 4:54 into the second but goals from Daniel Makovetskiy (2G, 3A) and Ronin Brunner (1G, 1A) saw STAR leading after 40. Bronson Lamontagne (2G) scored twice in an 11 second span, 29 seconds into the third to quickly even the score. Makovetskiy and Andrews traded goals before George Gapeshin and Zander Zorn (1G, 1A) did the same to force OT. Adrian Afrakov was the OT hero for STAR, scoring his 15th of the season 1:15 into overtime. 

OHA Edmonton (2) vs South Alberta Hockey Academy (8) U17 Prep

Cole Fisher (2G) and Garrison Peck (2G) each scored twice, Jack Elliott (1G, 3A) tallied four points, and Ty Hynes (1G, 2A), Ryker Klassen (2A) and Berkley Kufflick (2A) each had two assists as SAHA defeated OHA Edmonton 8-2. Cale Chimera continued his hot streak with his fifth goal in three games this weekend while defenseman Ryder Naim had the other OHA Edmonton goal. Mattias Radke (37/39) and Ethan Taylor (33/41) were in net for their respective teams. 

Pacific Coast Hockey Academy Blue (4/OT) vs BWC Academy Gold (3) U17 Prep

Jaiven Mann and Nathan Tomcheck (1G, 1A) scored 1:21 apart late in the first as BWC Academy Gold held a 2-0 lead that lasted through two periods. Ben Climenhaga (1G, 1A) extended the deficit 2:03 into the third as BWC Academy Gold seemed to be in full control. However, Jed Lake (2G, 1A) scored twice in 44 seconds to bring his team within one before recording a secondary assist on the Owen Hentschel (1G, 1A) game tying goal. Elliott Hill scored 3:44 into overtime to complete the comeback and give PCHA Blue a hard fought 4-3 OT win. Ashton Fummerton (38/41) made 38 saves to record the win. 

St. George’s School (3) vs Okanagan Hockey Academy (5) U15

Joel Parker (2G) opened the scoring just 40 seconds in and Caiden Osiowy-Mah added to the lead 29 seconds after that as OHA raced out to a 2-0 lead. A Braylon Lalonde (1G, 1A) goal exactly midway through the first saw OHA up 3-0 after 20 minutes of play. Albert Que scored his first of the season 27 seconds into the second as St. George’s was on the board. Rylan Bengert (1G, 1A) and Parker quickly responded for OHA as they held a commanding 5-0 lead. Tarik Lammam (2G) scored late in the second and again late in the third but OHA held on thanks to a 23 save effort from Caleb Bannister (23/26).

Okanagan Hockey Academy Black (1) vs Shawnigan Lake School (8) Female U18 Prep

Zoe Cramer (2G, 2A), Morgan Jackson (3G, 2A) and Mya Lawrence (4A) paved the way for Shawnigan as they defeated OHA Black 8-1 Sunday. Dawson Benson (1G, 2A) chipped in with three points and Aidyn Carkner (10/11) made 10 saves for the win. Rebecca Macfarlane scored the lone OHA Black goal. Ryann Faulkner (55/63) made 55 saves in the loss. 

Shawnigan Lake School (6) vs North Shore Warriors (0) U17 Prep

After a scoreless first Brandon Kendall (1G, 1A) and Ryder Kerr (2G) scored 14 seconds apart early in the second to give Shawnigan a 2-0 lead. Cole Mekelburg (1G, 1A) added his fourth of the season to extend the advantage going into the third period. Nigel Alberts (1G, 1A) added his sixth of the season 12 seconds into the third while Kerr and Matthew Last (1G, 2A) each found the back of the net in the second half of the third period. 

Pacific Coast Hockey Academy (5/OT) vs St. George’s School (4) U18 Prep

Grady Sluggett (1G, 2A) and Amadeo Sim (1G, 1A) traded first period goals as the second started tied 1-1. Louie Sim (2G) broke the tie 19 seconds into the second and Liam Magnuson (1G, 1A) added another St. George’s goal 1:39 later. Brendon Hall (2G) scored on the power play, his 10th of the season, to bring PCHA within one heading into the third. Hall scored with 1:20 left to tie the game and Jase Johnstone scored what looked like the game winner 35 seconds later. But Louie Sim scored with 10 seconds remaining to force OT. In overtime Parker MacDougall (1G, 1A) scored his ninth of the season to give PCHA the 5-4 win in dramatic fashion.  

BWC Academy (4) vs St. George’s School (6) U15 Prep

Kain Martinuik and Jayan Sinha gave St. George’s a 2-0 lead before Bruce Zhong got BWC Academy on the board in the dying seconds of the first. Eddy Spytz (1G, 1A) scored on the power play to restore the two goal cushion but Logan Henry (1G, 1A) countered 45 seconds later. Justin Moon tied the game with his ninth of the season but a Noah Fowler (1G, 1A) goal saw St. George’s on top 4-3 after 40. Declan Iacoviello tied the game early in the third with a power play goal. Aaron Castro’s eighth of the season with 12:28 left to play put St. George’s on top. Jack Poole secured the victory with his fourth of the season midway through the third. Les Toth (36/40) made 36 saves for the win. 

Yale Hockey Academy (6) vs Delta Hockey Academy (4) U18 Prep

Eli Barrett (1G, 1A) scored the lone first period goal and Caden Cail (1G, 1A) tied the game for Delta in the second as the game was tied 1-1 after two periods of play. After a low scoring 40 minutes of action, a total of eight goals were scored in the final period. Lucas Biros (1G, 1A), Jacob Henderson, Levi Benson (2G, 1A), and Grant Reid (1G, 2A) all scored for Yale while Cole Brown, Jackson DeGraves (1G, 1A) and Jack Ferguson replied for Delta in a game that ended 6-4 in favour of Yale. Spencer Hunnam (22/26) and Armaan Kaila (32/36) were in net for their respective teams. 

Delta Hockey Academy Green (1) vs RINK Hockey Academy Kelowna (6) Female U18 Prep

In a battle between the first and second place teams, RHA Kelowna (20-0-0) asserted their dominance with a 6-1 win over Delta Green (18-2-1) to remain unbeaten on the season. Emelia McDermid opened the scoring just 56 seconds in and Alida Korte (2G, 2A) scored a shorthanded goal less than four minutes later. Emery Twardochleb extended the lead 3:38 later as RHA Kelowna led 3-0 after 20. Karington Mollin scored the lone second period goal as Delta Green found themselves down two going into the final period. But RHA Kelowna put the game well out of reach with third period goals from Kennedy Sisson (1G, 1A), Korte, and Makena Lloyd-Howe. Farah Walker (13/14) made 13 saves to secure the win. 

North Shore Warriors (8) vs Pacific Coast Hockey Academy (6) U15 Prep

North Shore raced out to a 3-0 lead with Sean Murphy (1G, 2A), Peter Banicevic (2G, 2A) and Lucas Lekakis (1G, 4A) all scoring within the first 10 minutes of the game. Beau Tilden (1G, 1A) and Tristan Follick responded for PCHA early in the second period. Chase Vossenaar (3G, 2A) countered for North Shore just 37 seconds later before the period ended with Kaelen Rusjan (3G) and Vossenaar trading goals. Rusjan brought his team within one in the third but Vossenaar completed the hat-trick just four seconds later. Noah Dickson buried his seventh of the season for North Shore before Rusjan completed a hat-trick of his own. Treytin Frizzell and Banicevic finished off the high scoring game by swapping late third period goals.
