EDUCATION

  • What are some of the things your program does to provide educational support?
    • We have access to student tutors and professional tutors.  There is also a block set aside on Thursdays for what we call Academic Coaching.  During this block teachers are available in all classes for tutorials.  We also have a dedicated room called ELO that has two teachers there to help students with their work.
  • How are grades monitored and how often?
    • Marks are posted every two weeks to ‘school zone.’  The marks are also sent out to academies quarterly with failing marks and at-risk marks highlighted.  We also have our players take around to their teachers interim reports to fill out that focus on behavior and any missing assignments.  The interim reports are signed by the teachers, coach and parents or guardians. There are also 4 report cards throughout the year.
  • How are courses and the graduation path for student athletes chosen?
    • All of our high school students meet with a counsellor to ensure that they are on the right path for graduation.  We also go over the students MyPass which is a portal for graduation and post-secondary in Alberta.  By using the interim reports and the interim marks posted by the teachers we are well aware of how the student athletes are doing.
  • Do you have an academic probation policy?
    • We use the above process to monitor where our athletes are at and if they are struggling, we consider that a first warning to improve the grades which may mean missing programming.  If the mark improves over the course of a set period of time, then the student is free and clear to practice and play.  If they do not improve then we look at involving a tutor and set times for that to occur.  If after the first two strategies if the student still is struggling and is in the proper stream for the subject, then we take away practices and games until the effort to improve is provided.  Usually, the problem isn’t the intelligence of the student but the willingness to complete assignments or quizzes and tests.  When students need to stay at school, we have a dedicated room called ELO that has two teachers in it to help students with their work and proctor quizzes and exams.

RESIDENTIAL LIFE

Our athletes who need room and board are billeted among a great group of local families. Our billets provide a safe and supportive environment that our student-athletes can call home. We have had great success through our billeting program and feel that it has been an integral part of the growth of our Academy.

Okanagan Hockey strives to make our student-athletes feel right at home while developing their emotional intelligence. Our student-athletes will develop key life skills by living away from home, such as time management skills, cooking and laundry, self-advocacy, relationship skills, appreciation of new cultures, and controlled independence.

STUDENT ATHLETE HEALTH

We have Certified Athletic Therapists, led by our manager of Athletic Therapy Dwayne Laing. staffed daily for injury assessment, rehabilitation, and coverage during training and games. We have access to Dr. Erika Persson – Pediatric Sports Medicine Practitioner & Chris Holt – physiotherapist , who are both on site at a clinic within Vimy Ridge Academy.  and can be booked by appointment.

Student-athlete monitoring is typically completed with daily check-ins but can differ depending on the injury or illness.

Parent communication will take place for student-athletes who are injured for any extended period, including updates on their progress or changes in their injury status. Parent communication will also take place when any sort of physician contact occurs, such as general check-ups, walk-in clinics, or emergency room visits. This is especially helpful for families that are not in town so that they can be kept up to date on each step of the injury or illness recovery process.
