Winnipeg signs first overall pick Savoie

The Winnipeg ICE have signed Canadian Sport School Hockey League student athlete Matthew Savoie to a standard Western Hockey League (WHL) Player Agreement.

Savoie, 15, has attended the Northern Alberta Xtreme the past two seasons, most recently suiting up for their Midget Prep team in 2018-19, where he registered 71 points (31-40-71) in 31 regular season games, as well as adding 12 points (3-9-12) in five games at the 2019 BDO CSSHL Championships, where he helped his team capture the 2019 CSSHL Midget Prep Championship.

The St. Albert, Alta. product was named the 2019 CSSHL Midget Prep Division’s MVP.

The previous season, Savoie racked up 97 points (28-69-97) in 30 games with the Northern Alberta Xtreme Bantam Prep team, along with six points (1-5-6) in four games at the 2018 BDO CSSHL Championships. He was named the 2018 CSSHL Bantam Prep Division’s MVP.

The ICE selected Savoie in the first round, first overall, at the 2019 WHL Bantam Draft.
