Gilkyson scores OT winner, Edge captures Female Prep title

In a rematch of last year’s Canadian Sport School Hockey League Female Prep championship, it was the Edge School that came out on top.

“It was huge. We wanted this so bad,” says Edge captain Bree Kennedy after her team defeated the Pursuit of Excellence 4-3 in overtime.

The group exploded onto the ice after Kaitlin Jockims and Sarah Wozniewicz set up Gracie Gilkyson for the winner with 3:07 remaining. It was Gilkyson’s second of the game as she tied the championship game at two.

Jockims opened the scoring 2:30 minutes into the first period. Then Pursuit tied the game with 9:43 remaining on a penalty shot by Anne Cherkowski. Pursuit took the lead 2-1 on a power play goal by Booklyn Stevely. With 2:18 remaining in the second, Mia Bierd gave Edge the 3-2 lead.

In the third period, on a two-man advantage, Pursuit’s Devyn Millwater scored with 1:29 remaining to force overtime.

“This past month we’ve talked about humble confidence in our group,” says Kennedy. “That’s been a big thing, just being confident in our abilities. Even though that was kind of a defeating goal, I think we all had belief. We used that humble confidence that we had previously and put it into each other going into OT.”

Edge goalie Jessica Flegel finished with 26 saves.
