Ontario Hockey Academy Mavericks (4/OT) vs Mount Academy (3) East CCM
It took a role reversal for Bryson Boivin (1G, 1A) and Maxim Gorentsuk (1G, 1A) to finish off a weekend sweep. Down 3-1 after 40 minutes, the Mavericks were looking at a split with Mount Academy, and most of the damage had come from the hosts’ blue line. Benoit Pouliot (1G, 2A) set up Rafael Giroux (1G) on a first-period power play and fed fellow defenceman Kai Boyanchuk (1G) for his first goal of the season. Then he scored on the man advantage himself late in the second. Mount’s lead was gone 74 seconds into the third. Adam Fidrmuc (1G) cut the gap at 1:40, and Boivin (1G, 1A) tied it at 2:54 off feeds from Tomas Host (1A) and Gorentsuk (1G, 1A). Neither goalie gave up another goal in regulation. Joah Leblanc finished with 31 saves on 34 shots and Connor Alward with 31 on 35. In overtime Boivin (1G, 1A) returned the favour, and Gorentsuk (1G, 1A) buried the winner 2:36 in, one day after OHA beat the same hosts 7-5.
Pilot Mound Hockey Academy Women’s U18 Prep (0) vs Edge School Women’s U18 Prep (5) Women’s U18 Prep
Twenty-one shots to four. That was the second period at Kyle Stuart Memorial Arena, and it turned a one-goal Edge School lead into a runaway. Blueliner Amelia McMillan (1G) had opened the scoring 4:20 into the game, and at exactly the same mark of the middle frame, Sierra Sandilands (1G) doubled it. Sawyer Gillings (1G) added another less than a minute and a half later. Midway through the period, Pilot Mound replaced Kianna Kehler (23/26) with Rose Gabrielle Asilo, who stopped 12 of 14 the rest of the way. Avery Michaluk (1G) still beat her late in the second. The helpers were spread around: defenders Meghan Thompson (2A) and Mika Higgins (2A) had two apiece, and so did Sienna Saunders (2A). At the other end, Peyton Lane needed only 19 saves for the shutout. Jade Kostiuk (1G) added the fifth in the third, her first goal of the season, and Edge’s three-game losing streak was over.
RINK Hockey Academy Kelowna Red Women’s U18 Prep (0) vs Delta Hockey Academy Black Women’s U18 Prep (1) Women’s U18 Prep
A day after losing 4-3 to Kelowna Red on home ice, Delta Black got a rematch at Planet Ice Delta and nearly ran into a wall. Addison Guertin turned aside 44 of 45 shots in the Kelowna crease, holding firm through a 19-shot second period and 15 more in the third. Only one puck beat her. Early in the second, Courtney Couvion (1G) found the net out of a scramble at the crease, with Yubon Lee (1A) and Arlie Sangha (1A) earning the assists. That goal had to hold up, and it did, because Melina Bezic (23/23) was perfect at the other end. Neither team scored on five power-play chances, and Kelowna couldn’t get the equalizer on an extended power play late in the third. Delta had lost twice to RINK Kelowna Red by one goal this season, and this time the one-goal game went their way.
CIH Academy (BioSteel) (3) vs Okanagan Hockey Ontario (BioSteel) (7) East BioSteel
Okanagan Hockey Ontario finally has a win, and it came against the team that beat them 3-1 a day earlier. For 40 minutes, it looked like the same story. Artem Osin (1G, 1A) answered an early OHO goal with an unassisted marker in the first. Then he set up Toby Kindred (1G) 44 seconds into the second for a 2-1 CIH lead. Marc-Antoine Talbot (1G) evened it barely a minute later, and Timofey Vasilyev kept it 2-2 the rest of the period in the CIH crease. The third flipped the game, and it started with OHO a man short. Sebastian Di Foglio (1G, 1A) scored shorthanded a minute in. Joshua Moncrieff (1G) made it 4-2 midway through, and Luke Lang (1G) added another late, as OHO fired 21 shots in the period and Vasilyev finished 44-for-50. Thomas Garland (2G) bookended the day: he opened the scoring 65 seconds into the game and closed it with 21 seconds left, set up by Di Foglio (1G, 1A).
South Alberta Hockey Academy U18 Prep (6) vs RINK Hockey Academy Winnipeg U18 Prep (1) U18 Prep
This one belonged to Cohenn Rotar (3G) almost from the start. The South Alberta forward opened the scoring on a first-period power play and added another before the period ended. He completed the hat trick late in the second, shortly after defenceman Madden Atkinson (1G) gave the Winnipeg crowd its only goal to cheer. Nixon Bettenson (3A) did all his damage in the first 20 minutes, assisting on all three first-period goals. The last of those came from Max Osgood (1G, 1A) with 27 seconds left in the frame. Carson Ward (1G) and Aidan Poulin (1G), on the power play, rounded out the scoring. In the Winnipeg net, Noah Hawkins faced 42 shots and stopped 36, while Chase Nielson (18/19) had a much quieter day. The win was SAHA’s fifth straight.
Shawnigan Lake School U17 Prep (4) vs Coeur d’Alene Hockey Academy U17 Prep (2) U17 Prep
It was three road games in three days, and Shawnigan Lake had won the first two at Wenatchee by a combined 12-2. Early on, the finale at Frontier Ice Arena looked like more of the same. Ben Broekhuizen (1G, 1A) opened the scoring, defenceman Wyatt Wesner (1G) potted one on a first-period power play, and Hayden Slade (1G) made it 3-0 early in the second off a Broekhuizen (1G, 1A) feed. Coeur d’Alene didn’t fold. The hosts threw 23 shots on goal in the middle frame and finally broke through with four seconds left before the break, when Ethan Miller (1G) found the net out of a goalmouth scramble. Brayden Lee (1G) cut it to 3-2 with an unassisted goal early in the third. Midway through the period, Lucas Partridge-Mather (1G), also unassisted, restored the two-goal cushion. Shawnigan won by two, but both goalies, Bryce Roache and Gunner Podollan, finished with exactly 43 saves.
North Shore Warriors U15 (3) vs Pacific Coast Hockey Academy U15 (7) U15
Jax Sluggett (1G, 1A) needed only 58 seconds to beat Taylor Clarke (37/44), and Jhett Gervais (2G) doubled the lead less than a minute later. Kaiden Parsons (3A) set up both. North Shore had lost 4-2 in the same building a day earlier, and this time they fought back. Kesler Holmes (1G, 2A) set up Harrison Coletta (1G) and then Denver Dairon (1G, 1A), so it was 2-2 at the first intermission despite PCHA’s 23-10 edge in shots. Fifteen seconds into the second, Jaxton Heugh (1G, 1A) put PCHA back in front. Defencemen Sawyer Large (1G) and Ethan Kersten (1G, 1A) then cashed in on power plays to make it 5-2. Holmes (1G, 2A) added a power-play goal of his own in the third, with Clarke, of all people, credited with an assist.
Okanagan Hockey Academy U15 (6) vs STAR Hockey Academy U15 (1) U15
OHA didn’t let Saturday’s 5-4 loss linger. Their fix was simple: put Jacoby Charette (2G, 1A) and Kane Fitzgerald (1G, 2A) on the ice and let them work. The pair combined on three of the six goals. Fitzgerald set up Charette 60 seconds in and again early in the second, then took his own turn in the third with Charette returning the favour. Around them, Austin Coutu (1G) scored what stood as the winner, Jack Kenyon (1G, 1A) raced in alone for his first goal of the season, and Ryker Dupuis (1G) added another. Ryley Miner (24/25) lost his shutout bid 24 seconds into the third, when Calvin Smith (1G) scored on a STAR power play, but the hosts never got closer. Without Tyler Samuelson’s 44 saves on 50 shots at the other end, the margin could have been far wider.
South Alberta Hockey Academy U15 Prep (12) vs Prairie Hockey Academy U15 Prep (0) U15 Prep
Ten different players scored for South Alberta, and five of them were scoring for the first time this season. Diesel Bishop (1G) started it midway through the first, and Oaklen Rogers (1G, 4A) added a power-play goal 30 seconds later. Rogers finished with a hand in five goals, and Teddy Maser (3A) and Gavin Mackow (3A) had three helpers each. Most of the damage came in the second period, with six goals on 39 shots. Late in the frame, SAHA scored three times in 52 seconds: defenceman Nick Acierno (2G, 2A) scored twice 18 seconds apart, and Rowen Istace (1G) followed. Beckam Sprunger (2G) scored his first two of the season, the second with 15 seconds left. Hudson Reimer came on early in the first for Prairie and faced 72 shots, stopping 62. At the other end, Kade Walker (18/18) earned the shutout while making roughly one save for every four shots his teammates fired.
North Shore Warriors Orange Women’s U18 Prep (1) vs Okanagan Hockey Academy Black Women’s U18 Prep (2/OT) Women’s U18 Prep
If you caught only the first six minutes, you saw all the scoring regulation had to offer. Jazlyn Mellus (1G, 1A) put OHA Black ahead 70 seconds in for her first goal of the season. Mila Thomas (1G) answered for North Shore Orange before the period was six minutes old, with Priya Pandher (1A) earning the assist. Then the goalies settled in. Alyssa Seyler (30/31) and Afina Ryzhkova (30/32) matched each other through two scoreless periods, with shots nearly even the whole way. The Warriors had their chances to win it in regulation, including seven power plays and a four-minute advantage in the second, but didn’t score on any of them. Overtime needed only 3:20. Defender Daylie Abrams (1G) scored the winner, set up by fellow blueliner Nakayla Beza (2A) and Mellus (1G, 1A), and the OHA bench emptied to meet her. A day earlier, the same OHA group had shut out North Shore 2-0.
Notre Dame Hounds U17 Prep (1) vs Pilot Mound Hockey Academy U17 Prep (3) U17 Prep
Notre Dame and Pilot Mound split their two September meetings: the Hounds won the opener 4-1, then Pilot Mound took the rematch 3-1. The rubber match at Black Jack Stewart Arena ended with the same 3-1 score, and Hinata Hashimoto (3G) made sure of it. The Pilot Mound forward opened the scoring early in the first and doubled the lead late in the second. Both goals came off feeds from Edin Korajac (2A) and Tucker Derkach (2A). Lucas Mills kept Notre Dame off the board for nearly 52 minutes before defenceman Hudson Blackmore (1G), set up by Bo Johnson (1A), beat him on a third-period power play. The Hounds pushed with 15 shots in the period, but Mills held on and finished with 25 saves on 26. Hashimoto (3G) finished the hat trick into the empty net with 1:45 left. That one was unassisted, the only Pilot Mound goal his linemates didn’t have a hand in.
Northern Alberta Xtreme U17 Prep (0) vs Edge School U17 Prep (6) U17 Prep
Edge School made it two shutouts of Northern Alberta in two days, following Saturday’s 5-0 win with a 6-0 result at Kyle Stuart Memorial Arena. Matteo Dufour (1G, 2A) set the tone 2:16 in, and Luke Tschetter (1G) added a second midway through the first. Kyden Bartole (1G) struck with four seconds left in the period to send the Xtreme to the break down 3-0. NAX changed goalies after the first, replacing Ben Wagner (7/10) with Kash Andersen (19/22). Ezra Blair (1G, 2A) beat Andersen 37 seconds into the second. The third brought two goals 49 seconds apart: Easton Armstrong (1G, 1A) first, then defenceman Nolan Bishop (1G, 1A) with his first goal of the season. Cohen Spencer stopped all 18 shots he faced, and his teammates did the rest without any help from the power play. Edge went 0-for-4 with the extra skater, so all six goals came at even strength.
CIH Academy (3) vs Okanagan Hockey Ontario (7) East BioSteel
For the second day in a row, CIH Academy and Okanagan Hockey Ontario met at Iroquois Park, and for the second day in a row the home side had an answer for everything. Germans Dembo (2G, 2A) and Mikelis Kreicbergs (2G, 2A) supplied most of them. Kreicbergs opened the scoring in the first and then set up defenceman Jon Spillmann (1G, 1A). Lucas Dimopoulos (1G) made it 3-0 before Oshin Kusunoki (1G) got CIH on the board late in the period. Dembo wasted no time after either intermission. He scored 32 seconds into the second, then needed only 31 seconds of the third to do it again, with Kreicbergs (2G, 2A) assisting. In between, Kreicbergs scored on the power play, and Liam Fitzgerald (1G) added another. CIH never stopped pushing, and Sergei Kozinskii (1G, 2A) was in on all three of their goals. Pavel Vereshchak (1G, 1A) scored one of them, and Kozinskii finished the last himself with 11 seconds remaining.
RINK Hockey Academy Kelowna (2) vs Delta Hockey Academy Green (3) Women’s U18 Prep
Six wins from nine games to start the season for Delta Hockey Academy Green Women’s U18 Prep have come by virtue of a string pf positive performances, with RINK Kelowna the latest to come up against DHAG at the Planet Ice Delta on Sunday. Kelowna looked as if they were on the cusp of forcing the game into overtime, with an Ava McDermid equalizer in the latter stages of the third period looking like the moment that was going to do the job. However, quickly off the ensuing face-off, Delta grabbed control, and their foray into the Kelowna zone proved crucial. Alexis Vary (1G, 1A) popped up to turn in Adie Schneider’s (1G, 1A) set-up, making it 3-2 Delta green late, a scoreline they’d hold strong to see off their opposition.
Shawnigan Lake School (3) vs St. George’s School (10) U15 Prep
St. George’s School U15 Prep side never looked under too much duress on Sunday against Shawnigan Lake, with a 25-6 shots-on-goal margin in the Saints’ favour, seeing them leave the first twenty minutes up by a pair of goals and in complete control of the game. A pair of goals late in the second period for Kai Yamamoto brought Shawnigan back into things, but St. George’s school extended their lead beyond what SLS could close. Four in the third for the Saints put an exclamation point on their victory.
Calgary International Hockey Academy (10) vs Notre Dame Hounds (2) U15 Prep
The Calgary International Hockey Academy made good on their trip to Wilcox on Sunday, with the most productive CIHA players all rising to the occasion to finish their weekend off strong. Excellent seasons already from Miles Coy (2G, 3A), Cohen St. Louis (1G, 1A), Lucas Beaudin (1G, 1A), Gavin Worobey (2G), Rhett Davis (2G, 1A), and Mick Mantrop (1G) continued on, with quick goals off the hop from Coy and St. Louis positioning CIHA up two within the first five minutes. The Hounds hung around, staying in the game with a goal early in the second, but three goals in less than two and a half second-period minutes from Worobey, Davis, and Mantrop opened up a CIHA lead that made sure they remained in the driver’s seat. Four more in the third sealed the deal, with CIHA eventually running away with a 10-2 win.
Ontario Hockey Academy (1) vs Stanstead College (8) East CCM
The Ontario Hockey Academy became the latest Eastern squad to fall victim to the red-hot Stanstead College squad that has been tearing through every challenger that has faced them of late. OHO looked well in the game through twenty minutes, with goals from Matej Dobos (1G, 2A) and Adrien Charbonneau (1G, 1A) helping Stanstead into the second up 2-1. SC scored four in the second and two in the third, led by a pair from Maveric Thisdelle (2G, 1A) and four points from Isaac DeFranco (1G, 3A), to run away with an 8-1 win.
Pacific Coast Hockey Academy (1) vs Coeur d’Alene Hockey Academy (2) U15 Prep
The first four minutes and 38 seconds of Sunday’s U15 Prep clash between the Pacific Coast Hockey Academy and Coeur d’Alene Hockey Academy were crucial in deciding the game’s outcome, with early goals from Coeur d’Alene’s Brodie Grimm and Brody Finley establishing a lead within the first five minutes that would stand as enough to earn the win. After the Wings took a 2-0 lead, the PCHA Sea Devils threw everything at CDA, but in almost every instance, Wings goaltender Jesse Calder was there, making 49 saves on 50 shots in all to almost single-handedly hold on to CDA’s lead and earn a 2-1 win.
Yale Hockey Academy (7) vs BWC Academy (3) U15 Prep
An explosion of third-period offence in Sunday’s U15 Prep clash between the Lions and the Tigers proved the difference between BWC Academy and Yale in a high-event clash. Mitchell Wilson scored the only goal of the first period for BWC, predating a chaotic second period that saw Yale take a 2-1 lead, BWC turn it around to re-take their advantage at 3-2, and Carson Maclean make it 3-3 before the third. Maclean wouldn’t be done there, giving Yale a 4-3 lead early in the third, before he’d score again later to complete the hat-trick. Yale scored four in the third to turn a 3-3 tie at the second intermission into a 7-3 YHA win by the game’s end.
St. George’s School (1) vs STAR Hockey Academy (4) U18 Prep
STAR Hockey Academy’s U18 Prep side double-tapped St. George’s School in the first period of play, doing enough damage with their early attack that the Saints’ remainder was a performance that might have deserved a better result, but ultimately not enough to erase the damage done. STAR made good on the numerical advantage they had on the ice on both occasions which they did. Cam Hoggan (1G, 1A) and Brenden Donohoe made good on the powerplay chances, using their side’s superior artillery to make the difference. Thomas Ogee III added an empty-net goal in STAR’s eventual 4-1 win over St. George’s School, killing the Saints in Kent.
CHE Academy (1) vs Fort Erie International Academy (9) East CCM
The Fort Erie International Academy outshot CHE Academy 16-11 in an evenly fought first period that saw both teams exchange a goal apiece. Unfortunately for CHE, Fort Erie ran away with the game in its second half. Two in the back half of the second for Fort Erie made it 3-1, before a 27-5 shots-on-goal margin for FEIA in the third helped them score six more goals, with a hat-trick apiece from Thomas Harvey (3G, 2A) and Matvei Matuikha (3G, 1A) leading the way to a 9-1 win.
Yale Hockey Academy (5) vs North Shore Warriors (7) U18 Prep
The U18 Prep squads of the Yale Hockey Academy and North Shore Warriors spent the entire game trading blows, and before that culminated into blows being literally traded late in the game, it produced a fantastic game of hockey. Yale led twice, and North Shore tied it twice in the first period. North Shore took their first lead of the game in the second, before Yale scored twice to lead 4-3. In turn, North Shore scored two of their own, before a Nicholas Voinea equalizer sent the game into the closing stages, where Will Thompson’s big moment was waiting. Thompson hit the back of the net with less than four minutes to spare for North Shore, with Karter Lundmark (3G, 2A) scoring late to complete his hat-trick and North Shore’s win.
RINK Hockey Academy Winnipeg (6) vs Notre Dame Hounds (2) U17
RINK Hockey Academy Winnipeg’s U17 squad looked to complete their weekend right, with wins on Friday and Saturday over the Indigenous Sports Academy, their first two victories of the month. Two goals in the first period from Julien Crook (2G, 1A) set Winnipeg on the right path, with Crook’s hot season continuing into a weekend which he registered four goals and five points. Mateo Saldivar and Andre Pashe scored eight seconds apart in the second to put the dagger in Notre Dame, with Winnipeg eventually prevailing 6-2.
