Four CSSHL students win gold at Women’s U18 Championship

Four Canadian Sport School Hockey League student athletes are returning home with gold medals.

Anne Cherkowski (Vernon, BC), Stephanie Markowski (Edmonton, AB), Danielle Serdachny (Edmonton, AB), Rachel Weiss (Calgary, AB) and Canada’s National Women’s Under-18 Team were 3-2 overtime winners over the United States in the gold medal game at the 2019 IIHF U18 Women’s World Championship.

This marks the first time since 2014 Canada has captured gold at the U18 level, ending a streak of four straight gold medals by the United States.

Serdachny, who scored the overtime winner against Russia in the semifinals, and Cherkowski each scored in regulation for Canada.

Serdachny finished the tournament with four points (3-1-4) in five games, Cherkowski had three points (2-1-3) in five games, as did Markowski (1-2-3), while Wiess added one assist in five games.

All four players will return to the Pursuit of Excellence for the stretch drive of the CSSHL season.
