CSSHL at the WHL Draft: 2018

The 2018 WHL Draft was a record breaker for the Canadian Sport School Hockey League as 15 student athletes were selected in the first round.

A total of 81 CSSHL student athletes were selected, breaking the record of 66 the previous year, while the 15 fist-rounders surpassed the 2017 total of 13.

For the second straight year, and third time in the past four years, a CSSHL student athlete was selected with the first overall pick as the Edmonton Oil Kings took Dylan Guenther of the Northern Alberta Xtreme. The Edmonton, Alta. product just completed his first season with the Oil Kings, notching 59 points (26-33-59) in 58 games, earning him WHL Eastern Conference Rookie of the Year honours.

The 2018 WHL Draft also marked the fourth consecutive year a student athlete was selected from the CSSHL’s U15 Division, as Trevor Wong of St. George’s School went in the first round, 18th overall, to the Kelowna Rockets. In total, five student athletes from the St. George’s School U15 team were selected.

Of the 81 CSSHL student athletes selected, 46% were drafted in the first, three rounds.

All 22 WHL clubs selected at least two CSSHL student athletes, with the Rockets leading the way with six selections.
