CSSHL at the WHL Draft: 2017

A total of 66 Canadian Sport School Hockey League student athletes were selected at the 2017 WHL Draft, including the first seven overall selections.

Kaiden Guhle became the second CSSHL student athlete to be selected first overall in the past three years, following Ty Smith in 2015, as the Prince Albert Raiders used the top pick on the OHA Edmonton blueliner.

The 2017 CSSHL U15 Prep Division champion Pursuit of Excellence had six of their student athletes selected in the first round, including five of the top 10 picks of the draft, starting with Connor McClennon, who went second overall to the Kootenay Ice.

Once the first round was complete, 13 CSSHL student athletes were off the board, breaking the previous record of five set in 2016. Overall, of the 66 CSSHL student athletes selected, 53% of them were taken in the first, three rounds.

Braedy Euerby of the Delta Hockey Academy made it three consecutive years a student athlete from the CSSHL’s U15 Division was selected, as he was taken in the fifth round, 103rd overall, by the Vancouver Giants.

All 22 WHL clubs selected at least one student athlete from the CSSHL, with the Lethbridge Hurricanes and Vancouver Giants each leading the way with six selections.
