CIH Academy (2) vs Fort Erie International Academy (6) East CCM
A perfect start to their Saturday clash with Fort Erie for CIH Academy was the high point of the contest for them, with Toby Kindred making it 1-0 CIH through twenty minutes. Everything swung the other way come the second period, with CIH’s lead proving fragile when Elisei Melikian and Jayden Goolab struck just one minute apart for Fort Erie. Charles-Antoine Racette and Ilia Sokurenko would score in the second period as well for FEIA, a lead they’d only add to in the third en route to their second win in as many games to start the season.
Rothesay Netherwood School (2) vs Stanstead College (5) East CCM
Stanstead College were, at times, struggling in defence against Bourget College on Saturday, ultimately able to counter their five goals with eight of their own, seven after they trailed in the first intermission. Rothesay Netherwood School similarly had Stanstead sweating in the first two periods of the game, responding with an equalizer both teams Stanstead took a lead. Stanstead College, however, were able to pull away in the third period, with three goals in a twenty-minute span that saw them outshoot their opponents 18-6. Parker Banks (1G, 1A) and Timon Potocny (2A) notched two points apiece, with Jeremi Duclos-Claude, Elliot Bibeau-Rivard, and Matej Dobos scoring the three in the third for Stanstead to help them pull away.
Okanagan Hockey Academy (2) vs Delta Hockey Academy (5) U15 Prep
Wins on Friday and Saturday from the Okanagan Hockey Academy gave them a red-hot start to their U15 Prep schedule, with OHA outscoring their opponents 15-2. They’d stop in Delta on their way home from Vancouver Island early on Sunday morning to face a DHA team that won 6-1 on Saturday, and ultimately, it was Delta who managed to carry the momentum over. Alex Iachkin (3G) scored another hat-trick, his second in as many games, with his two powerplay goals and the eventual game-winner leading his Delta squad to a 5-2 win.
Edge School (3/SO) vs Notre Dame Hounds (2) U17
Edge School’s U17 squad picked up a big win over the Notre Dame Hounds on Saturday after a pair of losses to RINK Hockey Academy Winnipeg started their season, with the first of their weekend back-to-back ending as a 3-2 win over the Hounds. Notre Dame started the scoring on Saturday and forced the Mountaineers to come back, but it was Edge School who hit the front on Sunday, taking an early lead through Cade Bouchard that was responded to in kind by Oliver Bonilla for Notre Dame, sending the game into the third period tied at one. The two squads would trade a goal apiece once more in the third, with Maddex Conaty’s (1G, 1A) go-ahead goal for the Hounds cancelled out by a Nixon Reid-Dinning powerplay goal. The shootout is where the drama really began, with four of the first six shooters putting the puck in the back of the net in some stunning style. Tanner Kuntz scored in the fourth round for Edge school, with Hunter Eberle denied by Rajan Niwa (28/30) to see Edge School over Notre Dame to the shootout win.
Coeur d’Alene Hockey Academy (1) vs RINK Hockey Academy Kelowna (7) U17
An overtime thriller on Saturday night that saw RINK Hockey Academy Kelowna best Coeur d’Alene Hockey Academy was just the first of two head-to-head clashes this weekend between the two teams, with the follow-up an even more impressive RINK Kelowna performance. After Oliver Peck (2G) made it 1-0 RINK Kelowna in the first period, Declan Smith struck shorthanded to double the lead, a goal that would lift RINK to an advantage that CDA couldn’t make their way back from. Cole Morley (2G, 2A) scored twice, and Griffin Prairie Chicken stopped 24 of 25 for the win in a game that RHA Kelowna’s clinic display of offensive prowess was too much for Coeur d’Alene.
CIH Academy (5) vs Fort Erie International Academy (11) East BioSteel
A six-goal first period in the East BioSteel division between CIH Academy and the Fort Erie International Academy was a stark contrast to the scoreless first period between these two teams on Saturday, a game in which FEIA comfortably prevailed. CIH Academy managed to tie the game at one and score to pull the game back to 3-2 in the first, but unfortunately, that’s as close as they’d come on Sunday. An explosion of second-period offence from Fort Erie saw them hit the back of the net five times, putting the game too far out of reach for CIH Academy, despite their late game pushback. Vincent Harvey scored a hat-trick and Fort Erie grabbed five points apiece from Kirill Oleinikov (2G, 3A) and Shakhmassud Taniyev (1G, 4A) en route to scoring 11 times in the win.
Prairie Hockey Academy (4/SO) vs South Alberta Hockey Academy (3) U17 Prep
Prairie Hockey Academy were bested by the South Alberta Hockey Academy in their U17 Prep opener one Saturday night, looking to follow it up with a bounce back result against SAHA on Sunday. SAHA had won three straight after a loss to OHA Edmonton started their season, looking to carry that momentum into an opportunity to beat Prairie for the second day in a row. PHA looked like they were going to make it very, very hard on them, with Avery Schantz scoring twice in barely two and a half second period minutes to give Prairie a 3-1 lead. SAHA managed to mount a comeback, with Lucas Fisher and Lincoln Bensler scoring in succession to make it 3-3. Overtime solved nothing, and unfortunately for SAHA, the shootout belonged to Prairie. PHA scored two of their three while SAHA missed both of their attempts, with Maguire Lepp and Cooper Hale scoring in the shootout and Kayden Gregoire (40/43) making 40 saves over 65 minutes and preventing SAHA from beating him in the shootout.
STAR Hockey Academy (3) vs RINK Hockey Academy Kelowna (4/SO) U15
Sunday’s U15 game between was a high-intensity clash between STAR Hockey Academy and RINK Hockey Academy Kelowna that saw both teams trade blows like clockwork. STAR scored first, but every time they had a lead in this game RHA Kelowna arrived with an equalizer. Down 3-2 in the third, Coye Baker (1G, 1A) popped up with barely more than five minutes to play to tie the game for RINK Kelowna and send it into overtime. OT solved nothing, and Kelowna’s Reef Cegnar would score the only goal of the shootout to give his team the victory in a game that they never once led.
Pacific Coast Hockey Academy (7) vs STAR Hockey Academy (5) U17 Prep
The best-of-three weekend series between the Pacific Coast Hockey Academy and STAR Hockey Academy had gone the Sea Devils’ way through the first two games, with 10-5 and 4-1 wins predating their Sunday clash, one that could see them sweep the head-to-head series. STAR gave PCHA everything they could handle on Sunday, with PCHA’s 4-1 lead at one point dissipating into a 4-4 tie thanks to STAR’s relentless pushback. Unfortunately for STAR, PCHA’s top guns never stopped firing. Maximus Scheffer (3G), Nixon Szadkowski (1G, 3A), and Jackson Squire, as they’ve been all season, were offensively potent, with Scheffer’s hat-trick capped off in the third period en route to PCHA’s 7-5 win and third straight win this weekend.
Yale Hockey Academy (8) vs St. George’s School (6) U17 Prep
Both the Yale Hockey Academy and St. George’s School’s U17 Prep squads lost their season openers last Sunday and looked to their September 27th clash with one another as the chance to get a win in the proper column of the standings before the dawn of October. For much of Sunday, it looked like St. George’s School’s game, especially come the halfway point of the third period. With less than ten minutes left in the game, Jayden Ni’s (2G, 1A) two third-period goals had given SGS a 6-3 lead. That looked like enough to push them to the brink of victory, but with 9:41 left, Yale came to life. Carter Di Stefano (1G, 2A), Jaiden Naslund (1G, 1A), Hayden Zygarliski (2G), Marcus Phillips (1G, 2A), and Kaleb Newson (3G) provided Yale with five goals in less than six minutes, not just erasing St. George’s lead, but taking a two-goal edge of their own. Newson ended the game with a hat-trick and Yale goaltender Lucca Tassone making 36 saves in the game, including 12 in the third period to backstop Yale’s crazy 8-6 win.
BWC Academy (5) vs Okanagan Hockey Academy (3) U17 Prep
The perfect run of form to start the season with three wins in three games to start the U17 Prep schedule for BWC Academy was put to the test on Sunday with a visit to the Okanagan Hockey Academy, who’d themselves started strong with back-to-back wins to kick off the weekend and their regular season. The first twenty minutes of this game saw non-stop action, with BWC’s 2-0 and 3-1 leads proving fragile and OHA able to fight back from two-goal deficits twice to send the game into the second period tied at three. A powerplay goal just past the game’s halfway point from BWC’s Ryder Bui (2G) broke the tie in the second period, and Max Joseph, who had 25 in the U17 division last season, scoring his fourth of the season already in the third to make it 5-3 BWC. BWC’s Jordan Bigelow (20/23) was beaten thrice in the first but made all 14 saves he was required to make over the final 40 minutes to backstop BWC’s victory.
St. George’s School (8) vs Coeur d’Alene Hockey Academy (4) U15 Prep
The second of St. George’s School and Coeur d’Alene Hockey Academy weekend back-to-back came on the heels of St. George’s victory over Couer d’Alene on Saturday. Sunday would be a closer game than SGS’ 6-1 win on Saturday, but ultimately, St. George’s School scored four in 6:06 of the first period that put them head and shoulders above Coeur d’Alene. That sent them into the third period up 5-2, where TJ Podollan’s (2G, 1A) goals to push back were cancelled out by Michael Sung (3G, 3A) completing his hat-trick en route to St. George’s second straight win over CDA Academy.
Okanagan Hockey Academy (1) vs Delta Hockey Academy (7) U17
Delta Hockey Academy’s U17 squad had won two of three heading into Sunday, with a win over North Shore in between a loss and then a win against BWC Academy. They took on the Okanagan Hockey Academy on Sunday, who’d themselves split the first two games of the weekend with PCHA, following up a shootout loss on Friday with a 2-1 win on Saturday. Both teams couldn’t provide themselves with bounce back victories on Sunday, and unfortunately for OHA, it was Delta who looked the sharper. A pair of first-period powerplay goals sent Delta into the second period safely in front, with an explosion of five second-period goals for Delta securing them a lead that would hold through to the end. Delta grabbed goals from seven different players in Sunday’s 7-1 win.
Pilot Mound Hockey Academy (6) vs Notre Dame Hounds (1) U15 Prep
Saturday night and Sunday afternoon clashes between the Pilot Mound Hockey Academy and Notre Dame Hounds started their U15 Prep seasons this weekend, with Sunday giving Notre Dame the opportunity to avenge their loss at the hands of the Buffaloes. Unfortunately for the Hounds, Sunday’s luck wasn’t too different. The Buffaloes exploded for four in the first period alone, with Zac Klassen adding to a hat-trick on Saturday with a powerplay goal early on Sunday. Mohammad Rafih ended up scoring a hat-trick of his own in just his second-ever CSSHL game to lead PMHA to a 6-1 win.
Calgary International Hockey Academy (5) vs OHA Edmonton (2) U17 Prep
Calgary International Hockey Academy’s U17 Prep team hadn’t exactly found their way to 4-0 heading into Sunday via Orthodox methods, with their three games previous all tightly fought wins in which CIHA at some point trailed and had to mount a comeback. OHA Edmonton had won two of three prior to Saturday, when CIHA bested them 3-2, with the two teams embarking on a Sunday afternoon rematch. It looked like OHA Edmonton was running it back once more early on, with Gavin Gong (1G, 1A) scoring on the powerplay to make it 2-0 OHAE. However, from there, it was Calgary International Hockey Academy’s comeback efforts that made the ultimate impact. Bentley Hope (2G) scored late in the first and again in the second for CIHA, with a pair of Kale Okubo goal and three Juma Kinchen assists leading Calgary to a comeback 5-2 win.
North Shore Warriors (1) vs Shawnigan Lake School (2) Women’s U18 Prep
Shawnigan Lake School flipped the script on North Shore Saturday’s result, holding on for a tight 2-1 win at home despite being thoroughly outshot in the series rematch. A scoreless first gave way to Kaylyn Halwas (1G) breaking the deadlock early in the second, and Ziah Dennis (1G) doubled the cushion just four minutes into the third to put Shawnigan in firm control. North Shore finally cracked the scoreboard late through Lucy LaFontaine (1G) on the power play, but there wasn’t enough time left for the visitors to complete the comeback. Jordan Serdachny (2A) helped set the table for both Shawnigan goals. Jordyn Kemp made 27 saves for the win, while Brielle Cottreau was under siege all afternoon, stopping 42 of 44 in a hard-fought loss.
North Shore Warriors (3) vs RINK Hockey Academy Kelowna (4/SO) U17 Prep
RINK Hockey Academy Kelowna snapped a two-game skid Sunday, needing extra time and a shootout to finally put away North Shore 4-3 at home. Brik McCord Cooper (2G) was the story for RHAK, scoring twice in the second period, including one on the power play, to help erase a Jaxon Lodge (1G, 1A) opener and Taylor Parker-McKay (2G) response that had the game tied at two apiece through 20 minutes. Parker-McKay struck again to level things a second time before Grayson Hunter (1G) tied it up once more early in the third, setting up a tense, scoreless finish to regulation and overtime. Neither side could find the winner in the extra frame, sending it to a shootout, where Luca Vaugeois and Lodge both converted while Dexter Labrecque sealed it, outdoing North Shore’s two shootout goals from Maddin Neale and Liam McMorran. Satori Tam made 36 saves through the extra frames before locking down the shootout for the win.
RINK Hockey Academy Kelowna Red (2) vs North Shore Warriors Orange (1) Women’s U18 Prep
A day after a lopsided 6-0 win over the same opponent, RINK Hockey Academy Kelowna Red had to work considerably harder Sunday, needing a late power-play goal to escape with a 2-1 win over North Shore Warriors Orange. Harper Redden (1G) opened the scoring on the power play late in the first, and the game settled into a stalemate through a scoreless second period. North Shore finally broke through in the third when Caitria Cooper (1G) leveled things, but Jordyn Dumont (1G) answered just 83 seconds later on the power play to restore the lead for good. Addison Guertin made 11 saves for the win, while Zoey Pupillo kept North Shore in it all game, stopping 24 of 26 in the loss.
Delta Hockey Academy Black (3/SO) vs Okanagan Hockey Academy Black (2) Women’s U18 Prep
Delta Hockey Academy Black completed the weekend sweep of Okanagan Hockey Academy Black, this time needing overtime and a shootout to survive a much tighter 3-2 battle despite piling up 63 shots to Okanagan’s 20. A scoreless first gave way to a wild second, with Lyliah Savich (1G) opening the scoring for the home side before Neveah Brankovic (1G) answered less than four minutes later and Jojo Mailhot (1G) put Delta ahead before the intermission. Kiana Yao (1G) tied it up early in the third, and neither side could find the winner through a scoreless overtime, sending the game to a shootout, where Alyse Clift and Maielle Briggs both converted to outdo Okanagan’s shootout attempts and seal it for Delta. Annika Ewankiw made 18 saves through the extra frames and shootout for the win, while Alyssa Seyler had a heroic night in a losing effort, stopping a staggering 61 of 63 shots faced.
Pilot Mound Hockey Academy (1) vs RINK Hockey Academy Winnipeg (3) U17
RINK Hockey Academy Winnipeg avenged Saturday’s road loss to Pilot Mound in decisive fashion Sunday, breaking a scoreless deadlock with a three-goal third period to win 3-1 at home. Neither side could solve the opposing goaltender through 40 scoreless minutes, but Mateo Saldivar (1G) opened the floodgates just 36 seconds into the third, and Julien Crook (1G) doubled the lead less than fifteen minutes later. Emery Smith (1G) tacked on another before Nixon Gabruck (1G) got Pilot Mound on the board with under a minute to play, but it was far too little too late. Owen Anderson (2A) set up two of RHAW’s three goals in the decisive frame.
Edge School (9) vs Northern Alberta Xtreme (4) U15 Prep
A day after edging NAX 4-1, Edge School delivered an even bigger blow Sunday, riding a three-goal night from both Ian Kim (3G) and Nazar Shmatok (3G) to a 9-4 win to complete the weekend sweep. Kim opened the scoring early, and NAX’s Riddick Ford (1G) answered, but Alex Ubongen (1G) and Shmatok both struck before the intermission to make it 3-1 through one. Shmatok and Kim each tacked on their second of the game inside the first two minutes of the second period, and though Dalton Sherwick (1G) and Sebastian Morgan (2G) kept NAX within shouting distance, Kim’s third goal and an Ethan Cuff (1G, 1A) marker pushed the lead to 7-3 by the second intermission. Josh Pomeroy (1G) and Shmatok’s third of the night rounded out the scoring in the third to seal it.
Delta Hockey Academy Green (2) vs Okanagan Hockey Academy (1) Women’s U18 Prep
Delta Hockey Academy Green completed the weekend sweep of Okanagan Hockey Academy on Sunday, but the 2-1 final was a far cry from Saturday’s 6-1 final. Delta outshot the home side 40-19, yet needed every one of its goals. Addi McFegan (1G) cashed in on the power play late in the first, with helpers from Emma Biros (1A) and Sara Hettle (1A). Samera Gabriel (1G) doubled the lead in the second, set up by Myra Connor (1A). OHA got a jolt in the third when Claire Abrametz (1G) buried a feed from Silver Hopkins (1A) and Emily Kempers (1A), but Delta shut the door the rest of the way. Maive Gosselin-Berg was cool under pressure for Delta, stopping 18 of 19 for the win. Teagan Janzen kept Okanagan in it from start to finish, turning aside 38 of 40 in the loss.
Delta Hockey Academy Black (5/OT) vs Yale Hockey Academy (4) U15
Delta Hockey Academy Black needed just 80 seconds of sudden-death overtime to finish off a wild back-and-forth against Yale, completing a 5-4 comeback win. Yale came out firing, with Vanik Virk (1G, 2A) cashing in on the power play before the four-minute mark and Jase Chyld (2G) doubling the lead with a man advantage of his own to send the hosts into the first intermission up 2-0. Delta answered in the second, with Beckham Nowitsky (1G, 1A) scoring on the power play and Rhett Lowndes (2G, 1A) making it 2-2 unassisted, only for Hudson Koch (1G) to put Yale ahead again in between. Lowndes tied it back up early in the third, before Chyld buried the go-ahead goal midway through the frame with his second of the night, before Weston Patrick (1G) tied it right back up. On we went to overtime, where Cruz Natt (1G) ended it just 80 seconds in, set up by Jake Plante (1A) and Nowitsky.
