Canadian Sport School Hockey League:
Six CSSHL alums selected at NHL Draft

A total of six Canadian Sport School Hockey League alumni were selected at the 2018 NHL Draft, which concluded Saturday afternoon in Dallas, TX.

Ty Smith
New Jersey Devils
Round 1, 17th overall

Smith, 18, attended the Delta Hockey Academy during the 2014-15 season, leading the CSSHL’s Bantam Prep Division in scoring with 28 points (9-16-28) in 16 games en route to being named the Bantam Prep Division MVP.

The Lloydminster, Alta. product also registered seven points (3-4-7) in four post-season games.

Smith has spent the past two seasons in the Western Hockey League with the Spokane Chiefs, tallying 107 points (19-88-107) in 137 career games. He was named the 2018 WHL Scholastic Player of the Year.

Jacob Bernard-Docker
Ottawa Senators
Round 1, 26th overall

Bernard-Docker, 17, attended Edge School during the 2015-16 season, compiling 14 points (4-10-14) in 13 games with their Elite 15 team, along with two points (1-1-2) in four post-season games.

The Canmore, Alta. product tied for first among all CSSHL Elite 15 defencemen during the 2015-16 season in points-per-game.

The six-foot defenceman has spent the past two seasons with the Alberta Junior Hockey League’s Okotoks Oilers, registering 63 points (27-36-63) in 103 career games.

Bernard-Docker will attend and play NCAA hockey at the University of North Dakota next season.

Joel Hofer
St. Louis Blues
Round 4, 107th overall

Hofer, 17, attended the Pursuit of Excellence from 2015-2017. During the 2016-17 season, he appeared in 14 games with their Midget Prep team, compiling a 2.86 goals-against average and .915 save-percentage.

The year prior, the Winnipeg, Man. product posted the Midget Varsity Division’s best goals-against average (1.74) and best save-percentage (.937) while being named the 2016 CSSHL Midget Varsity Division’s Top Goaltender.

Hofer played for the Swift Current Broncos during the 2017-18 season, winning a WHL Championship while appearing in 19 games.

Angus Crookshank
Ottawa Senators
Round 5, 126th overall

Crookshank, 18, attended the BWC Academy from 2014 to 2016. During the 2015-16 season, he led the CSSHL’s Midget Prep Division in scoring with 61 points (42-19-61) and was named the Midget Prep MVP.

The year prior, the North Vancouver, B.C. product tallied 36 points (17-19-36) in 26 games with the BWC Academy Elite 15 team.

Crookshank has spent the past two seasons with the British Columbia Hockey League’s Langley Rivermen, where he has amassed 67 points (32-35-67) in 77 career games.

The 5-foot-11 forward will attend and play NCAA hockey at the University of New Hampshire next season.

Matthew Thiessen
Vancouver Canucks
Round 7, 192nd overall

Thiessen, 18, attended the Rink Hockey Academy during the 2016-17 season, appearing in 19 games with their Midget Prep team, while posting a 2.88 goals-against average and a .919 save-percentage.

The Altona, Man. product spent this past season with the league champion Steinbach Pistons of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League where he led the entire league in goals-against average (2.06) and was named to both the MJHL First All-Star Team and MJHL All-Rookie Team.

Thiessen will attend and play NCAA hockey at the University of Maine beginning in 2019.

Ty Taylor
Tampa Bay Lightning
Round 7, 214th overall

Taylor, 18, attended the Delta Hockey Academy during the 2015-16 season where he helped his team capture the CSSHL’s Midget Prep Championship posting a division-best 1.46 goals-against average and a league-best .943 save-percentage.

The Richmond, B.C. product has spent the past two seasons in the British Columbia Hockey League with the Vernon Vipers. During the 2017-18 season he led the BCHL in goals-against average (1.87), save-percentage (.943), while being named the BCHL Top Goaltender and to the BCHL First All-Star Team.

Taylor will attend and play NCAA hockey at the University of New Hampshire beginning in 2019.
